Female Sex Hormones 04:18
Estrogen: Primarily produced in the ovaries, but also secreted in smaller amounts in the adrenal glands and adipose tissue, estrogen contributes to a variety of functions in the body. While it’s primarily known as a sex/reproductive hormone, it also contributes to cognitive, cardiovascular, and immune function along with enhancing bone, muscle, and connective tissue health.
Progesterone: Also primarily produced in the ovaries, but also secreted in smaller amounts in the adrenal glands and placenta, progesterone has a primary role during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy, preparing and maintaining the integrity of the uterus.
Testosterone: While produced in much smaller quantities compared to males, testosterone has impactful effects on female health. Produced primarily in the ovaries and adrenals, testosterone promotes muscle, bone, tissue, and brain health, along with sex drive and lipolysis.
Understanding the relationship between the HPA and HPO Axis becomes critical from a programming perspective as many lifestyle factors, especially stress management, will influence the production of these hormones which can either optimize or disrupt female health.
