Domains of Performance 03:18

The physical, cognitive, social and emotional domains must all be considered and optimized to truly achieve sustainable high performance. All four of these domains are linked and can directly influence one another. That said, recovery stretches well beyond the physical domain, and recovery strategies must also considered for the social, emotional, and cognitive domains. Below is a brief description of each domain.

Physical Domain – incorporates both the traditional aspects of “physical fitness”, such as aerobic capacity, strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination, while also attending to the nutritional contributions.

Cognitive Domain - refers to the mental activity pertaining to the act or processes of perception, memory, judgment, and reasoning. Learning, training, repetition, and practice all affect cognition, as well as physical states such as exercise, exertion, fatigue, and sleep. It supports learning, critical thinking, and rapid, effective decision making.

Social Domain - consists of individual well-being through self-discipline, developing and maintaining trusted, valued relationships, and fostering good communication with others. Social fitness is closely related to emotional, spiritual, and family fitness.

Emotional Domain - emotional health is about being happy, self-confident, self-aware, and resilient. Emotions are reactions which are experienced differently by each individual. This is why different people can have different emotions when experiencing the same event.
