I chose this sequence for a client who always complains of his narrow feet and lack of balance. His ankles are limited in frontal and transvers plane and he is never out of his shoes or orthotics. Having more pronation in the right foot, ( causing that foot to toe out for more ankle stability), he pushes off ( back foot in gait) with the medial side of his big toe. As a result, his 1st ray and second toe are beginning to cross.
We did most of these exercises today and he was excited that not only could he do them, and work in bare feet, but how quickly he felt better. He has struggled with knee and hip pain so, understanding the why behind these exercises, has given him the motivation to work on his feet and ankles.
I only chose one loaded movement exercise since he does not have equipment at home, except for an exercise band. I chose the ankle pumps (LLM) because when we first started working together, he could not lift his heels off the floor in a calf raise. He walked with his feet in constant dorsi flexion, which caused so many compensations up the chain. Besides all the benefits of this exercise, it is a regression of a calf raise. It allows him to move into plantar flexion in loaded manor providing positive input.
I chose this block to help my client improve mobility and stability of her ankle. She injured her ankle a year ago and is compensating both in gait and specific exercises.

Hi Everyone, my name is Cynthia Vowell and I have been in this industry since the 80’s. I own a business, Better Bodies, which is located in a hospital based wellness center in Nashville, TN. My background was ballet which gave me a passion for movement and a desire to help others move effortlessly and, without pain. That led me on a journey over the years to connect and certify with movement professionals. I have completed all four levels of the Pain Free Movement Specialist program and am a graduate of the Gray Institute’s, Fellow of Applied Functional Science. I also am certified in Pilates, Yoga, Personal Training, Corrective Exercise, Master Core – Tex trainer, and Exercise Specialist. I am a huge fan of the VIPR and have been interested in Institute of Motion for several years. My client base includes those with chronic pain, joint replacements, golfers, and those who want to stay functional and healthy.
I utilize the 4 quadrants but am interested in having more “structured variability” when designing programs for clients. I am looking forward to going through Level One with you all and adding more tools to help improve my clients’ lives and health.
